SHANGHAI WOMEN
Shanghai Women is the second film in Peng Xiaolian’s Shanghai Trilogy. Starring one of China’s most popular actresses, Lu Liping, as a schoolteacher who discovers her husband is having an affair, the film explores the difficulties of building and sustaining personal relationships and families under the pressures of Shanghai’s newly materialistic society.
Variations on the theme are explored through the lives of three Shanghai women, when the schoolteacher takes her daughter and moves back in with her mother. The mother is played by veteran actress Zheng Zhenyao, who went on to win China’s Best Actress award in Peng’s next film, Shanghai Story, also featured in this season.
