SHANGHAI STORY
Shanghai Story won China’s equivalent of the Oscar, the Golden Rooster, for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress (for Zhen Zhenyao) in 2004. Woman director Peng Xiaolian is from Shanghai herself, and this story of three generations of Shanghai women is close to her heart. The Tang family were bourgeois, owning a garden house built in the former French Concession. But they suffered during the Cultural Revolution, and the children were dispersed. The elderly mother’s illness brings everyone back to Shanghai, but only to see old wounds reopened. Through the family’s struggle to overcome the past, Peng Xiaolian tells the inside story of Shanghai’s turbulent history.
