Grain in Ear has won the New Currents Award for Best Film at Pusan and the ACID award at Cannes. The title is a literal translation of the Chinese term for the harvest season—when the grain is in the ear. The protagonist, Cui Shunji, is an ethnic Korean who illegally sells kimchee. (a national delicacy) to survive. As an ethnic minority woman by herself, Cui is both treated with suspicion and vulnerable. She lives in fear of the police. all the while protecting her son from the harsh realities of being an ethnic minority in China. Two men hold out hope  but sadly she is betrayed. No matter what she tries, Cui cannot escape from the margins, and the film drives relentlessly to its terrible conclusion.
