MORNING SUN

MORNING SUN still

  • Dir. Carma Hinton, Richard Gordon, Geremie Barmé | 2003 USA | 120 mins.
  • Thursday 10th February 2005 6.00 pm (Brunei Lecture Theatre)
After Gate of Heavenly Peace shook the world, Carma Hinton gives the definitive testimony of the cultural revolution. With co-directors Richard Gordon and Geremie Barmé , she retraces those “blazing red years” to provide fresh perspectives on the political culture that informed violent passions of the movement.

Coming forward for the first time, key figures like the wife and daughter of persecuted premier Liu Shaoqi add weight to the meticulously researched archival stills and footage of major events. Period media arts and paraphernalia map the psycho-emotional topography of the Mao cult. Of special interest are two previously unseen propaganda films that manifest the triumph of class-consciousness over medical expertise, one starring a fresh-faced Joan Chen as a deaf-mute military radio operator!

PLUS The film will be introduced by Carma Hinton, and she will attend a short post-screening Q&A session. Don’t miss the full interview and Q&A on Fri 11th.

Carma Hinton was born and raised in Beijing in 1949, and lived there until she was 21. She has a Ph.D in Art History from Harvard University and has taught Chinese history, language and culture at Wellesley, Swarthmore, and MIT. All interviews in Morning Sun were conducted by Hinton in Mandarin.
