The Goddess Sanshengmu falls in love with a mortal scholar, Liu and eloping earthward, takes with her a magic Lotus Lantern, which scares off evil people'. Some years later, her bulling big brother Er Lang who is unimpressed by her marriage, imprisons Sanshengmu under Mount Hua. Years later her younger son, Chen Xiang, set s out to rescue her with the help of the pesky Monkey King, the search for whom takes up much of the central section. The Monkey King has taken on the form of a Buddha and he puts the young son through various tests.
