Taking Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai, Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch, and marrying them to the best of King Hu and Li Hanziang -- Ann Hui’s ‘Romance’ with China is shot 100% on location with a Mainland cast, setting a precedent for martial arts epics with authentic period detail and realistic action sequences. The drama is derived from the tension between a secret society of Han Chinese dedicated to the overthrow of their Manchu rulers, and the Emperor who is not only a Han by blood, but the brother of the society’s leader.
