PeonyPavilion is Yonfan’s bold foray into the ancient aesthetics of Kunqu opera. With melodies originating from Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, Kunqu opera is a highly acclaimed traditional performing art of China, which features exquisite singing and presentations. The film was shot on location in a world-heritage classic garden in Suzhou which has been given approval for film making for the very first time. The film depicts the fates and friendship of two women, one of them a Kunqu opera singer. Marrying into a rich family, she develops a dubious relationship with a female cousin of the family. With Yonfan and Kunqu, you can be well assured that this is going to be not only a feast for the eyes, but also a treat to the ears.
