The economy is not the only thing that’s changing in China. With the opening of the market comes the liberation of social mores. Mr Zhou is a college professor happily married to a factory worker and merrily frolicking with a former student. A simple case of adultery that hardly registers on the scandal scale, but long-time cinematographer and first-time director Lu Yue gives his characters so much life that the pain, confusion and affection easily reach heart-braking level. A master of the slow-burn long-take, Lu structures Mr Zhou around a series of dramatically powerful passages as scenes build up a emotional steam through a combination of good writing, fine acting, improvised lines and expert staging.
